Businessman Mike Villines was elected to the 29th Assembly District in 2004, a Central Valley seat that encompasses Fresno and Madera counties. Known as the heartland of California, this region is an agriculturally rich and ethnically diverse part of our state.
Recognized for his strong negotiating skills and his ability to lead a united Assembly Republican Caucus, Mike Villines was chosen by his colleagues in November 2006 to serve as Assembly Republican Leader. He not only led with distinction for over two and one-half years, but was one of the longest serving Republican Leaders in the last twenty-five years.
While Republican Leader, Mike Villines’ leadership skills helped set the tone for major tax code revisions to encourage business development in California; the formation of public/private partnerships to bring public works projects on-line faster; categorical school funding reforms that allow more budget flexibility; and streamlined regulations that balance environmental protection and natural resource preservation with the critical need of growing our economy. Additionally, he continues developing policy that addresses California’s growing water and clean energy needs for our state.
Prior to his election to the State Assembly, Mike Villines served as an aide to former Governor Pete Wilson where he worked to implement the Governor's legislative agenda to reform ineffective environmental regulations. He also served as chief-of-staff to former State Senator Chuck Poochigian and he currently owns a small public relations business.
